Anorexia
Anorexia Nervosa is an eating disorder that causes individuals to consume less food or even starve themselves in order to lose weight. This method of weight loss is very dangerous and can even become deadly if it is not treated.
The Causes of Anorexia Nervosa
Although there is no known medical cause of anorexia, there are many theories of why people might undertake this drastic form of weight loss. Today, people are constantly being bombarded with the images of skinny, beautiful and supposedly perfect people in the media. In order to live up to what people see as the “ideal” body type, some people might resort to anorexia to achieve their goals. Many people who get anorexia are perfectionists. They feel that they need to be perfect in all aspects of their life to be accepted by their families and peers. In order to achieve the perfect body and look, they may resort to anorexia. Many people who get anorexia feel that their life is out of control. They feel that their weight is one thing that they can control in a world of uncertainty. Their need for control may cause them to resort to anorexia.
The Problems Associated with Anorexia Nervosa
Anorexia is a very dangerous disease and it can cause a number of very serious health and physiological problems. People who have anorexia will normally experience dry skin, thinning hair and mood swings. They may find that they are constantly getting sick and cannot fight off infections easily. Anorexia can also cause severe physiological problems in individuals such as depression and thoughts of suicide. People with anorexia also run the risk of damaging vital organs such as the heart, stomach and liver. In severe cases, anorexia can cause severe malnutrition or even deadly heart attacks.
Anorexia Nervosa Treatments
Treatment of anorexia is often difficult because many people with anorexia believe that they don’t have a problem. The hardest part of the treatment process is getting people to realize that they have a problem and to agree to get help. Patients in the early stages of anorexia may be successfully treated without being admitted to a hospital or treatment center. Treatment for them can often include therapy and support groups. People with more severe anorexia will often have to be placed in a treatment center or hospital to be treated successfully. At these treatment centers, patients are monitored around the clock and receive constant care and supervision. To be successfully treated, many people with anorexia may need to stay in a treatment center for several months. If patients are prematurely released from treatment centers, they may never fully get over the disease.
