Drug Addiction
Drug addiction can be classified as the use of habit-forming drugs as an attempt to solve discomfort or unhappiness. For many people, the use of drugs brings escape from problems, social acceptance, gives them a rush and provides relief from pain. Initially drugs may seem to solve a persons problems and gives them relief and escape from life’s realities. But before the person realizes it, he becomes addicted to drugs and finds his life spinning out of control. Over time, people become physically and emotionally dependent on drugs. They begin to compromise everything in their life all for the sake of the drugs they take. People with a drug addiction problem will normally show signs of:
- Increase or decrease in appetite
- Extreme hyperactivity; excessive talkativeness
- Change in overall attitude
- Changes in friends and activities
- Poor school or work performance
- Difficulty in paying attention
- Lack of motivation and energy
- Defensiveness
- Unexplained moodiness, irritability, or nervousness
- Violent temper
- Paranoia
- Excessive need for privacy
- Dishonesty
- Unexplained need for money
- Unusual effort to cover arms, legs
- Change in personal grooming habits
At this point, the person is stuck in a dangerous cycle called addiction. The drugs have changed the abuser both physically and mentally. The abuse of drugs has now taken over the individual's life. Using drugs can have many damaging effects on the abusers body such as:
- Behavior changes
- The inability to think reasonably and clearly
- Illness and disease
- Death
The most difficult part of getting help for addiction to drugs is realizing that you have a problem. Once the drug abuser has realized that he needs help for his addiction, it is critical to find the right type of drug treatment program to fit the abusers’ individual needs and goals. Choosing the right treatment program is key in a successful drug abuse recovery. Some of the most common drug rehabilitation programs are as follows:
